Pastor’s Studies

BETTER THAN …. A PASTOR’S BIBLE STUDY ON HEBREWS

Time: 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesdays beginning Jan. 11 (13 weeks)
Hub (morning), Herd Worship Center (evening)
Leaders: Doug Baker, David Dorn
Cost: Free

Join pastors Doug Baker and David Dorn as they co-lead the expository study of the Book of Hebrews. The author of Hebrews encourages believers to stand firm in their faith and not return to former ways of living. The work of Christ is often described in the book as “better.” Christ has brought a better revelation, a better priesthood, a better covenant, a better sanctuary and a better sacrifice. Jesus’ new covenant supersedes that of the old covenant.

ISAIAH

Time: 6 p.m. Wednesdays beginning Jan. 11 (nine weeks)
Leader: Ingrid Akers
Cost: $20 for book

The prophet Isaiah declared that “the year of the LORD” had come and God’s people needed to either step up or stand down. Isaiah was brilliant, courageous and uncompromising. Indeed, when Isaiah spoke, kings trembled. Often named “the fifth gospel,” the book of Isaiah has more to say about Israel’s coming Messiah than any other Old Testament book. But too often, when Isaiah speaks today, God’s people have trouble hearing. Why? We often miss the larger context. In The Epic of Eden: Isaiah, Dr. Sandra Richter takes participants back to the eighth century BCE, explaining Israel’s religion and economy, exploring the definition and role of the prophets and helping us apply the message of this champion of the faith to our lives.

WESLEY: A HEART TRANSFORMED CAN CHANGE THE WORLD

Time: 9:45 a.m. on Sundays, Jan. 8-29
Leader: Russ Cooper
Cost: Free

This class will explore how God uses transformed human hearts to change the world by studying the life of John Wesley as depicted in the acclaimed feature film Wesley. There will be no outside reading, but bring your Bibles as we watch and analyze clips from the movie that illustrate key issues and examine Biblical passages that pertain to those issues.

CREED: WHAT CHRISTIANS BELIEVE AND WHY

Time: 9:45 a.m. on Sundays, March 5-April 9
Leader: Russ Cooper
Cost: $15 for book (optional)

We’re all searching. Sometimes the search is easy: simply type a question and the answer pops up. But sometimes our questions are complicated, and the answers are difficult to see and harder to articulate. How do we discover and examine the truths that give meaning and purpose to life? Adam Hamilton believes that some powerful answers are contained in the Apostles’ Creed, an early statement of foundational Christian beliefs. In this book for Lent, Easter and beyond, Hamilton considers important questions of life, reality and truth, exploring not only what Christians believe but also why they believe it and why it matters.

Women’s Studies

THE ARMOR OF GOD BY PRISCILLA SHIRER

Time: 10 a.m. on Tuesdays Jan. 24-March 7
Room 232
Leader: Kari Smith
Cost: $13 for the book

All day, every day, an invisible war rages around you—unseen, unheard, yet felt throughout every aspect of your life. A devoted, devilish enemy seeks to wreak havoc on everything that matters to you: your heart, your mind, your marriage, your children, your relationships, your resilience, your dreams, your destiny. But this battle plan depends on catching you unaware and unarmed. If you're tired of being pushed around and caught with your guard down, this study is for you. The enemy always fails miserably when he meets a woman dressed for the occasion. The Armor of God, more than merely a biblical description of the believer's inventory, is an action plan for putting it on and developing a personalized strategy to secure victory. Sign up online for child care.
